Black clouds had gathered over York as I stepped into Lowther Street. Thunder rumbled at the edge of the horizon.

As I hurried to beat the downpour, people stood in doorways. Among them, Gladys Bannering and her conchie brother, Thomas. They’d poked their heads out to assess the laden sky. She watched me curiously but I pretended not to notice. My mind was full of Louisa and the confidences we had exchanged.

As I neared Gillygate, it came down, heralded by a boom of thunder that shook the town. A solid cloudburst, rain pelting in rods off pavement and street and gutter.

Without overcoat or umbrella, I was soaked in a few moments, water dripping from the brim of my hat. But the rain felt fine. It was washing me clean. At last, I was being washed clean.
